Solstice Project 6 - summer 6 - sketches

An early concept sketch drawn about the same time as I took the first photos at the site. Water-soluble oil pastels, ink, 200 x 125 mm
The group of artworks of which the Solstice project is part is intended to be the genesis of a series inspired by and based on environmental sculptures that I have been making for some time. Above is my first sketch for the Solstice group. My intention is to make studio artworks that are based on but not copies of the sculptural outdoor work.
Quite early in the project, I drew a number of sketches and studies, all from memory or imagination, with this aim in mind. Maybe this was premature; I have spent much time making and thinking about the bushland sculptures; it would be strange to then ignore their actual appearance.
I decided to start drawing them from life.
A  typical example of  a landscape sketch by me: view of the line of the Solstice project from its starting point.
Graphite, 290 x 190 mm
Two further quick sketches from the same viewpoint.
Graphite, 190 x 160 mm
The left-hand drawing is a depiction of tone in the scene. The right-hand picture is an attempt to divide the scene into zones like stage scenery, because it is so busy, and to succeed as a picture needs definition. I think one should have attempted to solve a stage of a problem such as an idea or artwork at least three times before moving on. In fact, I believe it is good to keep trying new ideas and approaches until you produce a really bad one that's getting desperate for originality - only then can you choose the best image or idea.
