Sighting from Middle Rock looking west. Bushfire smoke obscures any view of markers in this photo.
After letting this project settle, I decided that rather than focus the project on the original site, Middle Rock, because of its small area and the presence of lichens which I prefer not to damage by regular climbing, I would start a journey to the sunset: I would by primitive methods - eye, stone markers - make my way in a straight line to the point where the sun disappeared.
It soon became apparent that stone markers, being a natural colour of the landscape, are too difficult to see from any distance. So I added some found items; two brightly coloured lego blocks found in a nearby street. Some child must have lost them in a way that is inexplicable. Looking back at the second marker placed.
The process is slow and full of mistakes. Much checking, walking back and fro through the bush is necessary. Of course, I could use a compass, but that is not the point.
Green lego marker and line of sight to the previous marker, looking back.
It soon became apparent that at least three highly visible markers are necessary in order to navigate in this way. A bright yellow golf ball was added to my collection of tools. The straight stick with a stone on it in the foreground of the next photo is another, subsidiary marker.
Close inspection will reveal four line markers in this view looking west: from foreground, stick with stone on it, pink lego block, green lego block, two stones on top of each other.
A strange feeling of achievement is the result of managing to line up several objects in this way. Technical issues present themselves.
More in the next exciting episode.
